Are wings and backplates compatible across manufacturers? For instance, will DSS wings fit on Halcyon or OMS backplates? Thanks.

It depends. If the wings have standard mounting holes (11" spacing) then yes they should. As to single wings that could be a different story. For example my DSS singles wing has slots for cam straps. It requires no STA. Some plates may not have cam straps and require a single tank adapter in which case since the dss wing does not require on it may not work without modifying the plate if the plate does not have holes for the straps. Doubles wings should not pose a problem.

For use with doubles almost all wing and all plates can be sued together. For doubles the only thing that passes through the wing is the band bolts. These are standardized at 11" centers.

For single tank use there is again issue if you use a STA. Single tank Adapters require only bolts at 11 inch centers.

If you wish to avoid using a Single Tank Adapter things get more complicated. In a direct mount (no STA) the cambands pass through the wing and plate. This requires at a minimum that both the plate and wing have camband slots, and that these slots line up in both. **There is no standard for the location of these slots in either the plates or wings**

In addition if you want to secure the wing to the plate it requires that the grommets in the wing and plate line up, **at the same time** the slots line up (if that's possible at all)

My advice is if you want to direct mount use a plate and wing form the same source.

yep, what he said. i found that out the frustrating way when trying to let someone borrow my plate and someone else's wing. i could cobble together one rig, but not two.

I must have gotten lucky when I bought a Zeagle backplate and Oxycheq wing. They fit together perfectly. I thought they were all standardized.

Some will, some won't, some sort of.

There is no standard.

What makes things really problematic is both the wings and plates of most manufacturers have undergone at least one revision.

If some body reports XX plate and ZZ wing works great, it's no certain that a newer / older example or either would also work.

Then there's the issue of "just how compatible" any combo really is.

The most basic level is "it just works, and I can dive it"

up to

"it works as intended"

Very difficult to predict what level of compatibility any given user might expect.

The single tank adapter essentially removes impediments to compatibility. Even if some wing's don't "require" and STA, it really helps cut down on issues between brands.

That's certainly true.

OTOH, STA's have their own pro's and con's.
