Hey

Im new to diving, getting certed this weekend! I just bought an OMS comfort harness online (I had to take off the comfort pads though cuz I'm so small and it was too loose otherwise). I also bought the 45lb lift bladder wings. Well it is much bigger than I expected and was wondering if this is way too big for use with single cylinders (80's?). Am I gonna look like a complete fool at my checkouts? (I also am planning on getting into double cylinder diving within the next year or so which is the main reason I got the wings in the first place). Thanks for helping.

It it's a little bit of overkill for a single AL 80 but the 45# bladder should work with twin AL 80s. I use a 32# OMS bladder and it's great with single AL 80s or Steel 100s.

If you got the bungeed 45# bladder prepare for some good natured ribbing from the DIR gods  "bungees of death" lol

Cheers.

first question is ( I may regret this),,,why did you buy something that does not fit you right. And online aswell.

2-Why did you not go into a dive shop to try stuff on and see if it is or was right for your body type.

Note:
Having to remove the pads so the rig would fit right is the wrong move. It can be adjusted. I would speak with a dive shop and see if they can help you out or speak with your instructor and get him*her to help you.

I can understand the want of having your own stuff...I KNOW you went into this to fast without even trying the rig in the water. or trying it on. Like it or not you did not make an educated choice. You have 0 dive experience and you went on to buy a rig that does not fit you right. and now you plan on going towards twins aswell in a year...um no. Not very wise. I would rethink that.

get certified, dive, try gear on before BUYING it.

If you do happen to log many dives..then your choice will become a more educated one.

There are no dive shops around me that sell backplate and wings and I also just couldn't make myself buy stuff from the shop when I saw I could save several hundreds of dollars online. And removing the pads really does nothing but make it a little less comfortable does it? It fits fine now.

I also plan on doing lots of diving but I also know I should only move to higher levels when I really am ready.

I would still like to know though if I should get a new bladder or if I can get by with the one I have.

I saw John Chatterton of Deep Sea Detectives and the Dive Portal DVD's wearing the red OMS bungeed wing of death and he was even wearing it during a deep wreck penetration. He was using doubles.

His dive buddy, Jim Pinson I think, was even wearing split fins that dive and neither one was wearing Jets. Go figure.

:D Geez, :D when will these highly experienced divers ever learn just how close to death they are. Where are the DIR gods when you need 'em??? :shakehead:

Get by maybe, but it is too much lift for a single, in my opinion. I would return it for a 30# and sell the 45# here or on eBay.

If you haven't used it, return it for a better size (the harness and the wing).

If you check with divers that dive doubles I think most will tell you that wings designed for both singles and doubles don't do a good job for either -- and so they have at least one singles wing and at least one doubles wing.

Beware of BP/W haters that want to make personal points in threads like this one without offering much real input to your question. ;)

I would also suggest returning the harness so you can use what you paid for (ie. the pads). If not concerned about "comfort", might as well save the money and get a standard harness for much less money. I have a Dive Rite 51lb lift wing for use with singles that I made my own bungee for, and just made sure I cinched it down pretty tight so it won't flop up and fold around the tank. Now, I have yet to dive this but I have read on these forums that it can be done comfortably so I will see. Don't let anyone dog you out man. Just do some searching here on the forums and you can get a general, semi-non biased idea of what will work for you.

Thank you to those that gave me a straight forward and honest answer without the lecture...haha jk. It's been really helpful. I am going to try to return the wings and hopefully I will be able to (crossing my fingers). If not I will keep them in a closet and hope that eventually I will need them. Either way when I get my 32 I will feel much more comfortable about what I am doing...and isn't that the whole idea? Thanks again.
