Hey folks

I am preparing to switch to a BP/W system, and in my searches I found that backplates come in different sizes, but so far I haven't found any measurement guidelines.

So far I'm looking at the DSS line (I like the lined webbing slots) but I haven't a clue what size I am since I'm a goofy looking man.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Kevin

If you click on each plate, "more information" you will open a window with some basic sizing recommendations.

Or, provide me your dimensions and I'll try to help.

Tobin

i would not obsess about it. most companies do not even offer sizes. unless you are extremely small or large a "standard" size should be okay. it is of course nice that DSS offers a choice. I (6ft) went with a large because I liked the extra weight. i am sure I would have done just fine with a medium, too.

I thought about just going with the "standard" or "medium" sizes...but all my life I've just known I was all weird proportioned. Arms longer than every long sleeve out there, and finding pants the right length is a crusade Indiana Jones would avoid.

What sort of dimensions would you need Tobin? Other than the generic that I am six feet even, 190 pounds.

What I'm concerned with is my trim. In the abomination of a "custom made" bcd that I have now, I swim along in an upright position. Only way I've counteracted that was with weights way up high on the tank (X8 Steel 119) but thats so damn heavy behind my head I cant stand it.

Hmm...I feel myself answering my own question, but I'm so new to the game I'll digest what you pro's have to say before I make a fool of myself!

It's very likely you could use either a "Medium" or "Large" at 6 ft tall. If you are not of "average proportions" i.e. short legs, long torso then I'd suggest the Large, if you have legs longer than the norm then I'd suggest the medium.

Thanks Tobin.

I went ahead and got the Medium, since my legs are long.

Jus as I completed putting in my card number and completed the transaction, I realized youre basically around the corner from me and I could have just walked in the store.

Well if I have a problem, now I know the perfect place to go!

Thanks again.

I questioned my sizeing on my back plate when i first recieved it but once i sized it to me body i have grown to really love an appreaciate it. dont give up on it once you get used to it you will have alot more comfort an balance to your positioning in water

Thanks Mr. Turner,

I sure won't give up on it. After I got saddled with my abomination of a custom BC a year ago, I was intent on doing the next one right. I've had on a couple...some I liked and some I didnt. Usually it came down to the harness though and I think I have that one worked out.

On a side note, you being in Bakersfield do you charter or anything out of Capt. Frog's?

hey there i just recieved your message an the question about c frogs down here an there really isnt much to charter except they own their own boat that is down at long beach they go to the west end alot for their runs. randy's a pretty good joe. he's having a real learning curve thing going on with the shop an the boat. alittle $$$$ on the charter uses it mostly for classes which is ok. about the same for a class to go to casino point so??????????? used to go to ventura on the explorer or the peace which are both good boats they go the anacapa or santa cruz always a good time. C frogs has some good points about it pretty good kit if your looking for that back plate. I have tha deepoutdoors with harness an really enjoy it. thanks for the reply an e-mail anytime. aturner@wetandeep.com

Thanks for the info Anthony. Randy is a pretty good guy, from the couple times I met him. Most of my buddies up here went through his class via Casino Point and one did their Advanced on his boat off Santa Maria. I took his boat out on the first night of Lobster season too. It had it's good and bad points. Haven't tried the Explorer or Peace yet.

I got the DSS medium backplate and the Oxycheq Mach V 40# wing to go with the Hog harness. Going to get it wet this afternoon actually to get it all dialed in.
