backplate positioning

Just got a backplate, OMS alloy. with a basic harness. How high(or low) should you have them located on your
back........I have a 10.5L steel Faber tank. pretty short

My experience is that the backplate is going to "seek it's own height" based on how tight or loose you rig the harness, but use the pictures on the website I linked as a reference.

If you are diving a single tank, you need only get the backplate positioning very roughly correct, because you can move the tank up and down in the cambands to get the right balance and access to the valve. Diving doubles, the positioning strongly affects your trim.

I found quite the opposite with a single.... i had expected it to be much easier than it was (I have dove a single tank in cold water before) but just back from Maui and it took me a couple dives to dial in my tank placement and get comfortable. i had the tank cam straps ALL the way up to the shoulder of the tank (just like with my dubs) AND loosen my shoulder straps a bit to keep the valve from wonking me in the back of noggan (darn yoke adaptor) and to keep the tank low enough for nice trim.

it could have to do with the lack of a drysuit and extra weight to ballast me... or i could just be a spaz...

but the bottom of page 8, the lady in white rashgaurd with braid is almost identical to where i found an AL80 best placed on me. steel tank will be a little different, but if you have it low enough to not whack you in back of head you should be pretty good for starters
