Hi -

The good news is my girlfriend has just fallen pregnant.

The bad news is that we are booked on a 13 day dive holiday with 10 close friends in 3 weeks time.

We are both very keen to still go on this trip, but our friends will of course be very suspicious when the g/f stays on the beach sunbaking (one friend is a doctor of course…).

So we are in a bit of a conundrum as we certainly don’t want to lie to our friends, but we are not ready to announce things just yet.

So what I’m looking for are some suitable (medical) reasons for her not to dive, preferably that we can link to the pregnancy (when we tell people in the future), but are obscure enough to hide things for another 6 weeks or so…

We are both new to this gig, our doctor does not dive, and we can’t ask for advice from anyone else without arousing suspicion…

Any ideas….?

cheers

A very stubborn ear infection?

BTW, congrats & welcome to SB!

She gets nausia if she gets in the water, maybe an ear thing.....

Hi Haveanna,

You ask: "So what I’m looking for are some suitable (medical) reasons for her not to dive, preferably that we can link to the pregnancy (when we tell people in the future), but are obscure enough to hide things for another 6 weeks or so…"

Maida Taylor, MD, MPH, FACOG, a diving medicine and women's health expert, advises, "...no diving while pregnant or even trying to conceive...."

Congratulations.

I'm with Doc Vikingo. Tell everybody you're trying to get pregnant and don't want to take the chance. Pregnancy is the only thing I can think of that ties in with pregnancy :)

Whenever I need a good excuse, I always turn to: http://phobialist.com/

A few goodies that your lady could have suddenly developed:
Selachophobia- Fear of sharks. (It was Shark week last week, so maybe....)
Soteriophobia - Fear of dependence on others. (unless she's a solo diver of course)
Ostraconophobia- Fear of shellfish.

Good luck trying to hide it from your friend the doctor. Women can spot a pregnancy immediately, so you might as well tell your friends and enjoy your time together.
