I was in OZ in August for 2 weeks but we stayed in Sydney for 7 days and then flew to Cairns for a week. If i could extend my trip i would spend the entire time in Cairns. I loved Tjapukai and Tropic rainforest and it's just beautiful!
We stayed at The lakes resort and spa, but pls, don't waste your money, get a private room at the hostel (there are tons of them) and you would be just fine.

here is a link to my OZ review http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=7217316&blogID=163397865&MyToken=411d9a88-2d93-4144-9242-0de5e4b5d73e
and if you have any questions about Sydney or Cairns, do not hesitate to ask. I made so many friends there, they wouldn't mind taking care of you:D

Not sure how your plans are progressing, but here goes my 2cents.
There is some decent shore diving on Sydney's north shore - go to ww.diveoz.com.au to get some dive buddies. Stop of at Seal Rocks as you drive north - amazing cave with GNS everywhere. Nice BnB too. Byron is great if the vis is holding. Hint on diving in Northern NSW and Queensland Australia - Southerlies are your friend. If you are in Byron, you MUST dive Cook Island just on the NSW and Queensland border - fantastic! Then I would head up to Bundaberg and do a 3.5 day live aboard with Dive Musgrave. Then progress up to Cairns if that is your departure point.
