Hi!

Well I've been doing a lot of diving lately but have been so busy with work I have not been uploading my pics much. And also haven't been taking many pics in general - had a bad run of viz!

Last night I got out for a night dive at Mornington Pier. We used to go here heaps but haven't been for a couple of months. Generally it has poor viz but I noticed we could see the bottom on the webcam so we decided to give it a go. Viz ranged from about 2-5m which was not bad :) Temperature was 10C though! I thought the bay would be a bit warmer by now but sadly not. I will escape next week to 25C in Fiji so can't complain too much ;)

Oh and on the dive last night I had the biggest fright so far diving - I ran into a smooth stingray that was the biggest I'd ever seen. Viz was down to 1.5-2m and I nearly swam straight into it. It was so big I could not see all the way from one end of its wing to the other at once. It was eating NPSS actually, didn't know they ate those?? Anyway, scared the CRAP out of me appearing out of the dark like that! :rofl3: I tried to take a picture but all I got was a haze of backscatter as it was making a mess eating.

Here are some other pics:
NPSS pile - there are thousands at this site now :depressed:

Stingray eye (no not the giant scary one :P)

Pale Octopus - it was in a long pipe and I swam to the other end and there was another one in that end! Wonder how many were in the tube!

Thought this was cute - a short head seahorse looking up

Lovely pics as usual Sas! I love the seahorse particularly!

Wow, scary ray, did you see Petunia's vid on her encounter with one?

Tks Liv :)

No I haven't seen her videos yet! Can't really watch youtube at work ;) Planning to go through them at home.

Nice shots SAS Interesting... I have only had 3 incidents that got my heart rate up. Two involved Rays! First time.. hadn't dived longe less than 2 dives. Stingray laying on the bottom not worried so I approached very carefully.. wasn't concerned. took a few shots with my little point and shoot film camera.. still didn't twitch :headscratch: got wondering what they"felt "like. took off a glove and carefully reached upand touched the front of his "cape". He arched his back.. his tail came up over his back and his stinger was pointing straight at me.. that is when I learned how fast I coulds swim in reverse! The ray swam just ast fast in the opposite direction. Glad I learned to always give animals an easy and obvious escape route

The second was this. I was letting the current pull me along and just haveing a quick peek around every once in a while so I didn't bump into anything when I was nearly on top of this ray.

That is a cutie sea horse!! Glad someone is out diving coz we sure aren't. It's so freakin' windy here. We managed to get out north to the Muiron Islands on Monday and the dives were great ... the rest of the week has been a loss and tomorrow morning isn't looking that crash hot either.

I just got in a sneaky lunch time dive at Shelley beach :-) We've had such awesome weather this month I couldnt resist.

wow...great pics / video and ray stories sas and shiela. i hope to be able to a add a qld touch to this theead with some dive pics next week. Can't wait to get wet again.

The weather in nth qld has been excellent and water still 24c so finally got some dives in on reefs between Cairns and Townsville. Most had been severly damaged by COTS about 2002 ..some had made remarkable recovery some not so good.
I got my first decent pic on a prickly seacumber sand gobler
