I've been trying to step my gear up to tech in preparation for an upcoming tech class I will be taking. I'm having a difficult time deciding on a regulator, and as I've searched the board I've noticed there are many different strong opinions.

I have dived with an Atomic Z1 since I started diving, and I am leaning towards upgrading to an M1 because I love the feel and ease of breathing with the Atomics. Is this a good choice, or are there other brands and models I need to give some serious attention to?

Since I'm happy with my Atomic B2s, take that into consideration....

Your profile doesn't indicate where you're from. If it's someplace with really cold or contaminated water, I'd give a hard look at Apeks and their well sealed system.

If you're traveling a lot, and are often far from the supply chain, you might give ScubaPro consideration. Their parts seem to be everywhere.

For me, the Atomic regs have been very reliable, and awesome breathing in an overhead-restricted environment.

Pick what's important for you, then fit the reg to those specs.

All the best, James

I would really look hard a Poseidon Odin, awesome reg... The parts deal might be a challenge in some areas, but it is an excellent reg. I have a couple of them and have done everything from the Caribbean to ice diving with the Odin and never had a problem.

Amazing how quickly a question about the pros and cons of a certain reg turns into suggestions for another reg! I would agree with fdog. The Atomics are great regs (a little pricey but some say they are worth it). But it is all relative to where you are. If you will always be coming home for service, great. If not I would look at something a little more common. Apeks and Scubapro are great alternatives.

He asked, I gave him another brand I thought he should look at...

I don't know that you would notice too much of a difference in upgrading to the M1. What type of diving are you currently doing?

All of my diving is cold water - depths below 150' - Winter ice diving. The Odin is a great reg and should be on a list to check out, if he is looking for a high performance reg.

Just as an interesting note, Atomics was founded by "renegade" engineers
from ScubaPro.

I own an M1 and love it. Bought it with the thinking that I was going to use it
for both cold and warm water diving.

All I've done is recreational diving. Living in Texas it has mainly been in lakes, however I've done a week in Cozumel and a weekend at the Flower Gardens (Gulf of Mexico). This past summer I took a trip to Ginnie Springs in Florida and spoke to some cave divers who really got me excited about getting technical certified.

Jcrain, i have 2 Atomic's M-1 DIN, and use with them as a set on my double's, and love them, I had a Posiden Extreme, Scuba pro, which i kept for my wife, and many other reg's, and loved the Atomic the best. I cave dive with it, been down to 200' a few times with it all ready, and love the reg, for me it's the best reg FOR ME, i don't want to start any trouble here :) I have mine with a cave ring on it, and DON'T get the swivel, it sucks, but you can't go wrong with the Atomic M-1, belive me i tried MANY reg's in search of the best reg FOR ME, and im sticking with my Atomic all the way,, just be prepared to spend over $650 for each reg, in have over $1,500 in my two, as one of them is on a 7' hose for cave diving, which was $100 just for the hose!! Great reg, go for it!!
