After reading tons of posts, tests, specs and reviews, so far I have narrowed down to these two, and am trying to decide if the Atomic is worth foregoing the current free Octo promotion from Aqualung. They both look like "great" regulators that get smashing reviews for ease of breathing and cold water performance, and the Atomic seems to be a bit more "robust", but are there any "objective" measures of how much more it would be worth to get that one from the get go?

The winner will mostly be dived year-round in the New York area (cold and currents), but I also want to be able to take it ice diving, to the tropics, deep and shallow, as well as local wrecks.

Any experiences / critiques are much appreciated.

Iv'e never used the aqualung so I'm sorry that I can't give you a comparison but I have two M1's and I would be hard pressed to give them up, they have been absolutely trouble free since day 1. Even with one attached to a 7' long hose at 150' my breathing felt just as natural as at 15'. They are expensive, no doubt about that, but in my humble opinion, well worth the money.

Good luck deciding.

The atomic's seem like really great regs, but they are way to expensive. The legend is almost as good in performance, but they are both so good you could hardley tell the difference. I would save my money and get a legend w/ a free octo.

I faced the same decision and chose the AquaLung Legend LX Supreme. You need supreme for cold water, which is what I dive here in NJ.

- About $100 cheaper WITHOUT the free octo

- WITH the free octo it's a no brainer

Thanks for the tips...just bot the M1 today and should be diving it the first time next Sunday; it was a tough choice, but the combination of the re-designed conic piston (rather than the diapraghm in the Legend), support for up to 80% O2 (might it sooner than I think), the "prestige" of Atomic, and of course a compelling deal from the LDS. Not much buyer's remorse yet, and not sure I'll have any come Sunday...
