Looking to help my girlfriend out with her first reg purchase. She will be diving cold off the Cali coast and travel to warm waters twice a year. I am looking at a used Atomic B1. First how much should I pay for a used one (with a Atomic first and octo), and second, SHOULD I buy a used one?

Thanx in advance.

I use the Atomic B2 with a Z2 octo. I love Atomic regulators as do all the employees here at the shop. I think that you need to carefully consider who you are buying from when buying a used reg. Also consider that most manufacturers will not honor a warranty for a used purchase or a transfer of ownership.

hope this helps

What's your budget like? You can get a brand new Z2 for $429 + say another $100 for a generic octo?

You can see the prices online at www.atomicaquatics.com click on the "Shop Online" button on the bottom right hand side of the page.

There aren't too many Atomics for sale on ebay I'm not sure if you'll find a used one. Also as the previous poster said the warranties are not transferred on a used reg.

Cheers.

A key question you should ask is whether the B1 has been upgraded to the same "jet piston" as used on the B2. Before upgrading, my B1 would develop an IP creep problem every 75 dives/100 hours or so. If it hasn't been upgraded, check with a regulator technician as to how much it would cost as part of a post-purchase service and overhaul.

I see no problem in buying a used reg, provided you have a good reg tech service it before use.

Regulators are one of the best pieces of gear to buy used.
It's pretty hard to screw up with one, and they usually clean up nicely even if it hasn't been treated in the best manner.

I got 5 of my 8 Atomics used, 3 were in great condition, and 2 were pretty ugly inside (salt water inside the 1st stage for months) but cleaned up to be 100% functional. Ti2 second stages are impervious to corrosion, so they are pretty much guaranteed to be like new.
On Ebay, you can buy used B1's(no octo) for a bit under $300, and Z1's for a little less.
As Charlie99 said, make sure you get one with the Jet piston. (On the ones with the Jet piston, the rubber trim part on the first stage mostly covers the HP cap instead of being donut shaped.) If it's not, the upgrade will cost you about $70 in parts IIRC.

You may have to wait a little to find one.

Atomic Ti2 octos cost quite a bit, usually about $200 used. (The second stage is 2/3 the price of a first+second stage set, with the first stage going for about $100.)

I bought a brand new B-2 off E-bay for $450..most of the good deals on Atomic regs you won't see if you don't check e-bay very often. Usually when someone lists one with a decent buy it now price it is gone within the hour..good luck

There is a couple of B-1's and a nice looking b-2 for sale on e-bay today..
