Atlantis Azores Trip Report: Jan 4-11, 2014

Saturday:
Took my very first group out ever here on the Atlantis Azores, (under the watchful eye of course, of seasoned Capt. Scott, who after 4 years, is moving on.) Owner Andy Pope was among our varied guests this week, originating from all over the world.
Sunday:
Headed out at 3:30 AM to arrive at “Oslo B”, a Whale Shark haven where snorkeling is the order of the day. Saw 10 animals in decent visibility. Next we moved around the corner to Liloan Point for some serious drift diving (a 4kt current!), spent two dives there. For the afternoon/evening we steamed NE to a sheltered inlet off Sumilon Island.
Monday:
Arose at midnight for an extended run up to Cabilao Island, a place known for it’s extensive wall diving. Arrived at dawn to calm conditions and secured our mooring for a two day stay. Dives throughout the day where interesting and varied, a different location along this vast wall on every dive! The night dives were done up on the top of the wall in about 5-6 meters and we drifted over a lot of activity. Various Eels, small Cuttlefish and other nocturnal were seen.
Wednesday:
Headed south to Baglasag Island, a small island with BIG diving! Spent the day there and then a few miles west to Panglao, an island riddled with small resorts and “many” dive sites.
Thursday:
Spent the entire day here touring different dive sites with local guide “Greg” who pointed out various hard to find critters, including small Cuttlefish and tiny Seahorses. The night dive was especially exciting for me, the biggest Cuttlefish I’ve ever seen was very cooperative and let everyone take a close look at him.
Friday:
Headed out just after midnight for the downhill run to Apo Island. Put the guests in for a morning dive there and then it was back to the barn at The Resort for some lunch and some local diving there on the day boats.
