You can buy a month of service, good in 190 countries, with data, for $30, $60, etc.
But I'm having trouble finding out what you can do with it!
If I am in the (for example) Philippines, and my wife is in the US, can I call her, or text her, cheap? She call or text me?
How does the service work?

When I travel internationally (to include the Philippines) I purchase the Passport Gold package for $120 per 30 days. This gets me 800MB of data, unlimited text messages, and 35 cents per minute voice calls. So text messages to and from your wife would be free, calls to you or from you would will be .35/min.

It is the voice call rate that I purchase this plan for as I often have business calls coming into my phone. The Passport Gold gets me the cheapest voice rates.

For data I have an unlocked phone and purchase a SIM locally.

I have used it in Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean, but not Asia-Pacific. As I see it, it's mostly about data, though the per-minute voice rates are hard to beat, even with traditional phone cards. Most of us are addicted to data these days--I find maps invaluable for travel.

I use it in the Bahamas and in the Turks and Caicos. Not so good in Cuba, yet, and I get the gold plan also. I use it both on my iPhone as well as my separate data card. ATT sends me a warning when I'm about to go over my data. It's cheaper than buying an unlocked phone/hotspot, for me, anyway.
