Question about ascent rate:

I am a new diver ( 20 dives ) and my deepest dive has been 65 feet.

I always thought a safe rate of ascent was 60 feet per minute but I have noticed that my dive computer seems to warn me if I ascend any faster than 30-35 feet per minute.

I receive a "SLOW" indication and of course I slow it down.

Do other diver's computers have the same ascent rate ?

Comments are appreciated.

Ascent rates have been slowed down. Your computer is following the new guidelines. Yes it is 30 ft per minute.

Slower is better.

60 ft per minute up to 90 ft. 30 ft per minute up to your safety stop and then a minute to the surface. Was the last thing I heard.

Thanks OD

I have the new RGBM algorithms and I figured that the suggested "ascent rate" might have changed.

Anyone know when the change came about ?

I belive all of Suunto's current computers warn if you exceed 30 fpm. Not sure of other companies.

Confirmed, current CMAS tables which are based on revised US navy tables use 18m/min descents and 9m/min ascents.
I don't remember exactly when it changed as it probably took some time for me to catch up. I think it must have been round about 1998 - 2000.

Changed about 2 years ago. When I certified in May 2001, it was 60 feet a minute, but changed shortly afer that.

My NASDS books from 1994 show 60ft/min, but my Suunto Eon, same vintage, uses a 30ft/min ascent rate.

My SSI Open Water Diver manual has a printing date of 5/01 and states 30 fpm or less as the rate for normal ascents.

The PADI OW book still says no faster than 18m/60ft per minute. My instructor emphasized that 30ft/min was a much safer way to go. I found out in a hurry that the slower I ascended, the better I felt after a dive.

This is simplified, but now I actually stick to more like 10 ft/min after deeper dives, with plenty of time spent shallow to make up for time spent deep.
