Okay, lets say someone wants to get an old ship. And then that someone wants to sink the ship and make a reef. Where would one start? I have a bunch of local divers that would like to band together on the project, but we don't know where to start.

Maybe you could try contacting the National Marine Aquarium, and the Reef Consortium Project? They're the people responsible for the Scyalla and might be able to give you some advice...

Rules vary, so it might help if we knew where you were?

I'm on the Outer Banks of NC. I've contacted Project AWARE, and they have some stuff to send me.

Check out the Crystal Coast Artificial Reef Association. I believe they were at least partially responsible for the 2 new artificial wrecks that went down near Cape Lookout this year.

I have also heard of some people getting together to clean up smaller boat in preperation for sinking. I'm not sure what these projects are doing now, but I think I heard about them from Discovery Diving in Beaufort, NC. Give them a call and they might be able to tell you more.

I'm sure the state Wildlife Dept, or Marine Fisheries, or whoever will have something to say about it as well.

If you are still interested Go See Capt Slate in Key Largo

Around here, its about 100k to have them scrubbed clean for environmental reasons.
Great project. I think it would be very rewarding. we have many here and they are teeming with marine life.
