I would say like most people, when I hear the word dolphin I think of Flipper.

Yet, when I was down in Barbados recently I went into a museum and they had a bunch of different kinds of local fish displayed on the wall and one was a ""dolphin"" but didnt look like a Flipper fish at all.

It was about three feet long....very narrow....and if you have never seen one...I guess it could be discribed as a stretched baracuda without the attitude facial expression.

So when one orders dolphin on the menu.....are they getting this type of fish that looks nothing like a Flipper or a porpoise???

Sure there are. There is the dolphin mammal- aka-flipper and the dolphin fish aka- Mahi Mahi or/and dorado. They are quite tasty, fight like crazy and are some of the prettiest fish in the ocean. We have them here off the coast of NC. Most of the time you see them on the menu as Mahi Mahi or some times Dorado just to keep people from freaking out thinking the restaurant is serving "flipper".
Ummmm grilled flipper.....I mean dorado. :)

Just order the "White Fish" then youll never know what your eating!!!!

There are many many kinds of dolphin. There's the fish (pictured above) which is what is what we commonly eat and there are several species of mammal - Atlantic Bottlenose, Common, Spinner, Spotted, and Pacific Whiteside are a few that come immediately to mind. It's also interesting to note the largest dolphin is usually thought of as a whale. The Orca or Killer Whale is actually a dolphin and not a whale.

When tuna says "dolphin safe" it refers to the mammals.

Tuna just doesn't tast as good since it's been dolphin safe.

Huh, and here I thought "Dolphin Safe" meant it was OK to feed it to them. :D
