Hi Canon Users,

I'm just an amateur diver and think about getting the G12 or the S95 for underwater photography and one of those low-priced Canon standard housings.

I would like to take photos of "normal" small stuff (e.g. nudbranches, but not those super small pigmy seahorses) - just like this:

Can you tell me if I need a macro diopter (I think they are also known as "wet lense") for such photos?
And if yes, is it possible to mount such a macro diopter onto the Canon's standard housings?

Links to the Canon housing I'm looking at:
Amazon.com: Canon WP-DC38 Waterproof Housing for Canon S95 Digital Cameras: Camera & Photo
Amazon.com: Canon WP-DC34 Underwater Housing for Canon PowerShot G11/G12 Digital Camera: Electronics

Any hints are highly appreciated.

Regards, Jan

The WP-DC38 for the S95 takes Inon mounts for wet lenses for both wide angle and close up
The WP-DC34 takes only close up lenses using adapters from Dyron or similar that allow you to attache threaded M67 lenses

The capture area you can take without a close up lens depend on the camera, technically speaking none of those camera takes real macro without a close up lens. Both will get you to real macro (2.4 cm frame height in 3:2 format) with a +6 diopter

wow, you guys on this forum are awesome! Thanks for the quick response. It would have me + google probably taken ages to find this out..

OK, I came up with this website:
Inon Bayonet Adapters

Assuming that I would like to take photos like this..

.. with the Canon S95 and the WP-DC38, I assume that I need to purchase the "28LD mount base for Canon WP-DC38 (S95)" adapter here, right?:
Inon Bayonet Adapters

And do all those diopters fit into the above adapter?
Close-up lenses (diopters)

Sorry for my newbie questions, but I don't know yet how to figure out which diopters would fit into the adapter..

Any hints are highly appreciated!

Rgds, Jan

cool. found it ;-)

OK, to take those macro photos do I need anything else except the following setup?

1. Camera with housing: S95 with WP-DC38
2. Adapter: 28LD mount base for Canon WP-DC38 (S95) (see: Inon Bayonet Adapters)
3. Macro Wetlense: Inon UCL165LD (see: http://www.oceanleisurecameras.com/products/lenses/inon-ucl-165-ld-lens.html )

Do I need anything else or can I straight screw in the Macro Wetlense into the Adapter?

Regards, Jan

P.S. here are some nice photos taken with the S95 which I've found on flickr. I haven't received an answer from the Flickr user yet which setup he exactly uses though.. I would like to achieve similar results with the above stated setup.

He probably use a strobe, based on the color..

All of these http://www.flickr.com/photos/89057162@N03/sets/72157632837148793/ is taken with a Canon G7 (the G12s grandfather obviously)
Its almost exclusively taken with nothing but the G7 in a OEM housing. No strobes, no diopters, no nothing..
The ones that ARE taken with flash is internal flash (and obvious)

A strobe is mandatory for macro because the lens mount obscures the internal flash. Some of those pictures though do not require a diopter
And tigerman is right that set is 100% with a strobe check some macro without strobe and no diopter here (I forgot the arm on that trip!)
Best of Philippines 2011-12 - a set on Flickr

But I wouldn't need any other gear concerning the macro diopter and the adapter, right?

yes.. I'm still trying to figure out which entry-level / low-priced strobe I should get.. maybe I start with ambient light or built-in flash an diffuser and then later on add a strobe. I wonder if with the above mentioned adapter will I still be able to mount a strobe? (Because there is just one tripod screw on the housing.. using the screw either for the adapter or for the strobe- --- or for both?

A good strobe will far outlast your camera, potentially several cameras. Buy the best one you can afford (within reason of course). Money spent on entry level strobes is money you will wish you had back when you outgrow an entry level model in 6 months. Spend a little quality time perusing the strobes section (Strobes and Lighting) to get a better idea of what you should be looking for.

Again, spend some quality time in the strobes section of the forum before you start spending money. Study up on tray and arm assemblies. The lens mount fits between the tray and the housing. Strobes mount to arms.
