I'm a Fish!
Is there any deals or steals a new diver should know about when buying weights. They are expensive and I cant find many used. So is there a budget yet reliable way to make or purchase weights?

Buy used if you can, if you really want to cheap out you can melt fishing weights you find (but melting lead has its own issues). Otherwise no, just shop around best you can.

For me, it was patience and watching Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. I was buying for 2 of us, so I didn't want to pay full retail.

The father of a former GF owned an auto repair shop. He had several buckets of old tire weights. He gave us however much/many we wanted. We borrowed one of those molds used for making your own scuba weights, and made some. Outside, plenty of breeze. Cost was a can of propane (I think) and a cheap saucepan that we discarded afterwards. That was ca. 1987. I still have mine. They don't look "professional", but they work fine.

If I ever need more weights, I think I will purchase one of those molds.

Some online stores used to sell weight pockets that you could fill with your own steel or lead shot, readily available at any hunting store. I don't know that bulk shot is any cheaper than individual weights. Cabella's sells lead shot in 25 pound bags for about 60 bucks.

Or you can mold lead weights yourself, as others have mentioned, that has its own considerations

Join a local Facebook divers group and ask around if anyone has spare weights they are willing to sell. Bound to get a few people willing to sell you spare weights for cheap. But weights are generally a one time purchase so buying new and they should last a life time unless you loose them.

Odd. I just scored a lifetime supply of weights.

One of our local fire departments retired its dive team and gave me thier weights. 3, 4, 6, and 8 pound weights. Lucky break was appeciated.

If you order some, only order weights. Theyll rattle around and destroy anything else in your package, or will bust through the wall of the box.
