There was a proposal submitted by a touring shark expert regarding a moratorium on shark cage diving off the coast of Steward Island, citing that it would not give any idea of the effects the activity has on local divers.
New Zealand First convened a public meeting on the island to deliberate the policies on shark diving activities in the area.
It should be recalled that the Department of Conservation has recently presented some regulations which included limiting tourist attraction to a specific area to protect swimmers and sharks. Apprehensions were then raised regarding Paua divers’ practices and the idea that diving businesses are driving sharks to the place and putting the public in danger...
