I am looking into getting an Aqualung Legend - when I took my rescue class a year ago, the person I was buddied with to practice buddy breathing had one, and I was really impressed with its performance then. Now that I can afford to upgrade my reg, and while Aqualung has the $100 off special going on, I thought it would be a good time to get it.

But, now that I'm looking, I see that there is a Legend, Legend LX, and both available in Supreme as well as regular models. I wanted to know what the differences in those different models are? I dive within rec limits (100' is the deepest I've gone, average deep dive is to 80), primarily in So Cal (so coldish, but not freezing, water - coldest gets to low 50's, maybe even high 40's in winter, but when the water is that cold, the air temp is sill much warmer, so no worry about freezing). I will want whichever one I get to be a DIN reg. Does anyone have any ideas as to which Legend model I should get? If you could explain the differences to me, I'd really appreciate it.

And, before anyone tells me to do a search, I just spent the last hour searching, and while there is a lot of info on the Legend, I can't find anything that specifically answers this question.
Thank you!!!!

I use the Legend LX and its breathes great! But you won't catch me in 40 something degree water! If you can afford it, go for the Legend LX Supreme....and you;ll have a great reg for years and years.

More info at www.aqualung.com

I dive the Lengend LX Supreme and dive it in Indiana in the winter with no problems what so ever.

It is a great reg and with proper maintaience it will last for years.

IMHO If the air temp is in the 40's you will want the supreme for sure.

Thanks to those of you that responded, but what I was really looking for was info on what the differences between the different models was? From the last post, I gather that the Supreme is for cold? What's the LX do that's different from the plain Legend? From the website, all I can tell is that it has the adjust switch that the plain one doesn't - is that worth the $100 difference?
And to clarify, the air temps seldom get below 60, it's the water temp that can get colder than that, but never anything lower than the very high 40's, and that is seldom - coldest is usually in the mid-50's.

Thank you!

Yes

It doesn't do anything differently. The LX has a diver adjustable second stage. This allows the diver to adjust the cracking resistance of the second stage. basically you can make it easier to breathe or harder depending on the conditions.

Yeah pretty much. The regular one as well as the LX features the venturi assist which basically prevents freeflow when not in your mouth, and directs the airflow into your mouth when engaged.

That's not cold. Cold water is only classified as below 50 degrees, but I wouldn't worry if you are still in the very high 40's. The supreme version features a lipshield to keep you extra cozy and a heat sink to reduce second stage freeze up. Not very beneficial in your case.

As far as a recommendation for a choice for yourself. The Legend is an overbalanced first stage mated tot eh balanced first stage, so you aren't really benefitting from the adjustment until about 50 or ft. depending on conditions anyway. So if like you said you very rarely ever break 100', and you do not intend to do much more, stick with the Legend. If you do not want to find yourself in the upgrade situation ever ever again and you may begin to dive deeper, go for the LX(also if you are desparate to convert later on, you can buy the parts and make the second stage adjustable).
They are all env. sealed so you don't need to worry about that. They will keep the sand and crap out. hope I didn't loose you with the rambling.

The Legend has a dive/surface lever on the second stage but does not have an adjustment knob.

The LX and LX Supreme have an adjustment knob on the second stage in addition to the dive/surface lever. The LX Supreme also has a cold water mouthpiece shield that goes around the diver's lips in order to keep them warmer during the dive. In the Aqua Lung Catalogue, it also mentions that the LX Supreme has been adjusted to meet European standards for cold water diving.

I have the LX Supremes though I immediately removed the lip shield on mine when I got them. I suspect that the LX and LX Supremes are otherwise virtually identical.

From what I understand, they are identical.... except for how they are adjusted and that lip shield.

A good tech can make one perform like the other.

Even a dopey one probably can. It is just likely adjusted a little tighter to prevent freeflow. Whoope !?
