I bought a Legend Reg yesterday (2005 model on closeout for $350 with free octo). it came with a gold ring. such a good deal i went to get one for my girlfriend. The problem is, the only one i could find left had a black ring on it. still a legend, and everything looks identical.

so the question is: what is the difference between the gold ring and the plain black ring? nobody at the shops could tell me.

Also, what is the upgrade to make a reg cold water compatible? or do you just have to buy one ready for it? as my girlfriend said though, your not getting me in water colder that 50. i think she may be right

Never seen a black ring one. Legend and Legend LX are gold, the supreme variants are silver.

The supreme upgrade is
- silver ring (cosmetic)
- lip shield (removable for warm water - seems kinda nice, but I haven't dove it yet)
- intermediate pressure is lower to avoid cold water free flow (125 +/- 5 I think)
- used to be a snowflake on the shield, buy my brand new 2006 Legend LX Supreme ACD's don't seem to have them anymore that I could see easily
- $15 list price

Any LDS can adjust the intermediate pressure for you - simple adjustment on the 1st stage.
I believe all the Legend 2nd stages have the heat exchanger fins like the Apeks so you are set there also.

ohh right, details...

the octos are both marked with the snow flakes. the 2nd stages are marked with the ( >10* ). it seems odd that the octos are rated for cold water where as the regs are not. seems almost like some sort of marketing ploy to get the consumer to upgrade.

The gold ring legend is just something new that USD decided to put on for 2005 maybe for however long the reg. will be out there. The black ring you could say is the "original" look for that specific model. The Legend LX always had the gold ring.
