I don't think you did it intentionally but it was handled poorly. Maybe I'm old school about this but a simple email back to me that said "Hey, I have another interested buyer but since you and I have already been talking I wanted to give you the first shot at it." It's interesting you made the comparison to eBay/Amazon because that's exactly what it felt like, like I had lost an auction when the time ran out.
It ain't the end of the world, I'll find another BC.
