Is there a dive op on site at the Hotel El Presidente? Anyone have experience with them? Also, is there any shore diving off of the beach at this hotel?

Considering your experience level, Scuba Du (onsite) would be an excellent option. I was certified with them 2 years ago and they took care of us newbies very well. They had 2 boats go out every day, one with the newbies, one for the old pros. Try to get Geovanni for your DM if you use them... He Rocks!

Shore diving is free if you use them and it is arguably the best on the island.

Below are some glowing reviews...

I just sent them an email to see what they can do for me - thanks for the info and recommendation.

The dive op -- Scuba Du at Presedente is tops . I have been diving with them since 1995 with a very picky group of divers. (physicians) the hotel is great, the food is great (a little pricey) and Scuba Du is the best. All of the staff there has been there for at least 8 years. Which says a whole lot for Jorge who owns Scuba Du.

You cannot go wrong with them.

I was just there this past August for a week and cannot say anything but good things about them.

Regards,

IMO, Scuba Du is adequate but not great. If you like large slow boats that visit predermined dives sites the same day of everyweek then you'll be fine. Service is great though.

Thanks for your opinion. Have you ever used "Dive with Martin"? I'm considering them as another option at this point.

DWM does a very nice job. Or at least the time I used them they did. I use DWM and Aldora in Coz. Used SD only once when we stayed at Presidente. DWM does a nice job of taking care of customers. They are sometimes slow with returning emails though. Martin stays pretty busy and tries to do alot of that himself. You would not be disappointed with them IMO. You might also try Aldora. More expensive but IMO worth the money.

While your question wasn't to me, I've used both Scuba Du and Dive with Martin. Both are good operations, but different.

Just the same way that the ideal automobile isn't the same for everyone, the best dive operator for one person isn't always the best for someone else. What some divers would call "babysitting" others would call "the DM pays close attention to the safety of his customers".

Scuba Du, like many dive ops at upscale resorts, are oriented towards the occasional diver. Excellent equipment, great DMs, very service oriented. They dive conservatively, keeping a close watch on their clients.

Dive With Martin handles a wide variety of customers and works hard to juggle both their multiple pickup locations and the wide variation in experience levels of their divers. Their boats show a bit more wear and tear than Scuba Du, but are in reasonable shape. The DMs are more to guide you to where the neat critter are than to hold your hand.
