Going to Myrtle Beach in July. Spending a long weekend right on the water. Wondering if the shore diving is any good? Anybody got any ideas or advice? thanks :beerchug:

I haven't dove Myrtle beach but I have dove Charelston SC. From what I saw there, I doubt there is any shore diving. Charelston is about 80 miles from Myrtle, but the people at the shop I dove with in Charelston were pretty friendly, they might be able to give you better info:

Charelston SCUBA- 843-763-3483

Hope this helps

I dove in Myrtle Beach a few weeks ago and have attempted to dive in Hilton Head. My overall impression is that in South Carolina, unless you are doing zero visibility, shallow dives for fossils, the shore diving in SC is not worth trying.

In Myrtle Beach, the only operation I could find that was running in mid-March was Coastal Scuba, it is in Little River which is basically the far North end of Myrtle Beach. Cameron Sebastian who runs it is a good guy. We dove on a wreck and an artificial reef. They have many potential destinations and will undoubtedly be running more frequently in July than they were in March.

There is another operation in Murrell's Inlet called Action Water Sports if you are closer to that end of Myrtle Beach, but I can't say anything for them since they weren't running trips yet when I was there.

After my trip, I heard through the grapevine that another operation, Dolphin Dive Charter run by Captain Tuck Rion, is also very good. It is a little south of MB near Murrell's Inlet. You can find all of these dive operations on the internet.

Good luck.

There's no shorediving in that area, it's all sandy and flat - why it's so popular as a beach. We dove with Express Watersports out of Murrell's Inlet, maybe 1/2 hr. or less south of Myrtle Beach. Dove two wrecks, the Bill Perry and 11Mile Tugboat/Airplane. The Perry's all by itself in about 70', the tug is only about 40' or so, with a line on the bottom that leads to the plane. On a clear day you can see the tug from the surface. In July the water was 85'.

There's some good restaurants in Murrell's Inlet also.

There is none to speak of. You best bet is a dive boat. I would suggest going with Express Watersports.

If you decide to go with Coastal you can almost count on doing Barracuda Reef, which isn't bad, but only for so much. Be sure to read their website closely, one quote on there is, cancelation is NOT an option. I have had some friends taken out when noone should have been out. Just an observation, not a blast.

I went out with Coastal once last year. 20 odd miles out, 1 of the two (brand new) engines starts messing up. That 6-7 hour charter ended after 14 hours. I've been out with Captian Tuck several times and have not had any issues plus if it starts getting nasty, he'll cancel or look for calmer water. BTW His boat is callt Dolphin II. Tony and Brady (the DMs) can be a little abrasive until you get used to them. They're actually pretty good guys though.
