If you mean the St John right by St Thomas....there are a number of decent dives there. Unfortunately I am currently in the Yukon of Alaska and do not have my dive log to get you the names. If you decide to do the Rhone, remember it is in British territory and you need to have your passport with you.

As for the island, it is 90% forest reserve. Easy to drive around on. Lots of deserted beaches depending on when you go.

Take the ferry and go over to St Thomas for a day shopping there. I would never drive there but interesting place. The booze is unbelievably cheap at the St Thomas K Mart.

Kenny:
Just got back last week from a week on island with my whole family. Only got 3 days of 2 tank diving in, and 2 of those days were fairly shallow dives since I was photographing younger family members getting certified.
That said, the last day we did Mingo and Congo reefs. They were both worth while. We had also done Calf reef and the canyons there were very nice ( bring a lite to look under the ledges).
I dove with LowkeyWaterSports this trip and although they had more divers on the boat then I usually like, we never seemed crowded and the staff was VERY good- particularly Ellen and Andy.

I thought most of the "famous" snorkeling beaches were overrated or over crowded. One of the real highlights was Waterlemon Cay. If you get a chance don't miss that. Also I would be remiss if I didn't mention the one dinner we had out at Paradisio Cafe. It was great.

Rich, above, mentioned the Rhone ( which is off Salt Island in the BRITISH VI's). You can do that from St. John, but it is an all day trip. (We went over to Virgin Gorda for 4 days and did the Rhone from there). It is one of the best dives in the Caribe, and certainly the most famous wreck in the Virgins. If I can answer any other questions, feel free. Good Luck. DD

It has been a couple of years, but my wife and I stayed on St. John on three occcasions. We stayed at Moho Bay in their Eco-tents (raised platforms) on a steep hillside that ends at the water. Lots of good snorkling and easy to find fairly private areas to explore (large Tarpon that you can almost touch). We took a day hike to Watermelon Cay and snorkeled around it to come back against a heavy current (first major current lesson since we almost died). Great coral at the time. There is a dive charter there at Maho but I was into snorkling at the time with plenty of turtles, nursesharks, rays and squid to check out. Low Key Watersports is at Cruz Bay and seems the best outfitted dive facility that I remember being on the island. On the south end of the island we explored Rams Head and Salt Pond (more good snorkling and a neat hike to Rams Head Peak. IWe also took an around the island snorkel trip with Capt. Bob on the Cinnimon Bay. A stop at a very small island south gave us a chance to explore a couple of reef walls (Flanagan Island I think). Great total experience. Loved the place. I'm hoping to get back to dive myself now that I've taken up diving.

The diving in and around St. Thomas and St. John is generally quite good. The operators from both islands frequent many of the same sites. We often see Low Key at Little St. James and Cow & Calf. Congo Key and Carvelle Rock are a couple more excellent dives between the two islands. Much of the diving is relatively shallow and conditions are benign.

The snorkel trail at Trunk Bay is pretty cool for newcomers to the ocean. My favorite beach is Cinnamon. If you're interested in beaching it for a day, check the cruise ship schedule and make the lightest day your beach day since the St. John beach traffic is heavily dependent on the St. Thomas cruise ship traffic.

Not sure if you're a drinker or not, but Woody's has the best happy hour around and the Beach Bar in Cruz Bay is a cool place with good eats as well. La Tapa and Morgan's Mango are both excellent restaurants for a little more upscale fare.

The ferry between St. John and St. Thomas runs on the hour from 8am as the first from St. John to St. Thomas and the last ferry back to St. John is at midnight so spending time over here is pretty easy as well. Magen's Bay has one of the top 10 beaches in the world and we just have more plain old stuff to do including the Butterfly Farm, the Skyride to Paradise Point, Atlantis submarine, OnDeck racing (a really fun sailing adventure) and some cool island tours that talk about the history of the islands.

I would be sure to bring my passport and go to Jost van Dyke or dive the Rhone in the BVI.

If you have any other questions about your trip here, feel free to ask!

Rachel
