As I plan a liveaboard trip on the Solmar V going to the Socorro Islands, I did some research but found little recent trip report information on this itinerary. As I haven't seen an Undercurrent Chapbook since 2005 with 2004 trips in it, I was wondering if anyone had any first hand experience on the Solmar V to Socorro. I know they have changed owners, and I know there were some complaints about fewer sharks being seen in recent years than in the years past but wondered if someone here had any recent info. After an experience less than wonderful on Nekton to the Cay Sal Bank, I'm looking forward to a Feb 22 trip to see some Pelagics. I know what can be seen, but wanted to know what has been seen lately.

Thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt,

I just got off the boat two weeks ago from a trip to Socorro on the Solmar V. This was my fourth Socorro trip since the new owners took over the operation over two years ago (so I guess they are not that new anymore). They have made SIGNIFICANT improvements to the boat. You can see the changes on their website which covers most the details. They have NITROX onboard now, better food, better wine, a computer workstation for guests to use, wide screen TV, tuna tower has been removed, new carpeting throughout, new mattresses on the beds, new hardware in the cabins and heads, etc. There are only a few boats I've been on where I can honestly say that each trip the boat gets better, but the Solmar V is definitely one of them.

This was also my 5th trip to Socorro and as always, I highly recommend it. However, what you see there is very much dependent on chance. These are wild animals in the middle of a big ocean, so there are no guarantees. There were some trips where we had all the action at the Boiler at San Benedicto Island, other times the Canyon was the hot spot. I've had trips to Roca Partida where we saw schools of hammerheads, whitetip sharks, silvertip sharks, mantas, whalesharks, Galapagos sharks, and silky sharks, and others where the water was dead calm and we saw a couple of whitetips. On my recent trip we saw all of the above (except the whalesharks which are not in season), but this doesn't mean that the folks on next week's trip will see the same action. At Socorro Island we got into the water at Cabo Pearce and were greeted by 20-30 dolphins that stayed with us the entire dive, but other than a couple of occasional dolphins in past trips, I've never seen anything like this before.

I do think that I'm seeing more activity now than I did several years ago. I can tell by the photos from years ago that many of the same mantas keep coming back. I've also seem more hammerheads than I had in the past. Definitely more sharks than I've ever seen there before.

The Solmar V is in their 15th year of diving Socorro and has made around 300 trips out there. I really love seeing the same crew each time I get onboard. Rey, Pedro, Luis, Geronimo, Aurelio, Eric, Daniel, and a few relief crew members were on the trip this time. They are all fantastic and will do everything they can to make your trip as good as it can be.

I haven't had time to post my trip photos online yet, but I have a stripped-down slide show on YouTube.com that you might enjoy: Socorro Island Manta Diving Aboard Solmar V

Bonnie,
Wonderful stuff! You really need to do up a real trip report with photos to post here for everyone. My husband and I have been talking about this trip for awhile and we would love to hear more about it.
thanks for sharing!

Every time I do a trip I promise myself I will do a trip report. I took notes all week with that intention, but finishing them seems to be the problem. Work keeps getting in the way. Thanks for the encouragement. I will post a trip report soon.

thanks! Last night I showed my husband the Scubacore DVD where they take the trip on the SolmarV. Half way through it he says "okay, I'm in. We gotta do this". :D So maybe 2009!

Can't wait to read your report!

OK folks, here is the Solmar V trip report I promised. I was going to put this online here in its entirety, but I got a little too carried away with the formatting and needed stronger HTML than what we get here. I'm still working on links to higher res images and there are probably typos I've been staring right at and not seeing, but that will all be fixed in time.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the trip or the boat.

Socorro Island Diving Trip Report Aboard Solmar V - Jan. 2008

Enjoy!

Wow, the videos of Socorro blew me away. We dove with mantas a few years ago in La Paz. The videos brought me back there. From what I hear the mantas don't make it in to La Paz anymore. I sent the page out to my group & I'm waiting to hear who's in. Bonnie, what would you say is the premier time for hammerheads & mantas?

Thanks for the info & videos, WOW.

Thanks for posting the trip report. This is a trip my husband and I have talked about on and off for a couple of years, and one of these days will do it. Hmmm, maybe 2009 with Robin!?! ;)

Hi Richie,

The mantas are out there all the time. The Solmar V goes to Socorro from November through May. They don't go down there during hurricane season. I've had great manta encounters every time I've been down there, some better than others. What might have been lacking on one day at one particular site was always made up for on another day at the next dive site. As for hammerheads, I've seen the most of them at Roca Partida on a trip I did in December, where they came very close to the divers even when we were at 60'. Other times they stayed deeper. Same with the silvertips. The whitetips, silkys, and Galapagos sharks are shallower. No matter when you go, its an amazing experience.

I'll certainly post something here on Scuba Board the next time I get a trip together and you all are welcome to join me!

Bonnie
