I can't seem to find any underwater images from a G1X anywhere on the internet ? Has anyone else spotted any ? I have a G1X and I am leaving for a liveaboard in the Maldives at the weekend, I am not a camera expert by a long shot and every review I have been reading about the G1X has more or less trashed it. Sounds like I have made a bit of a error in judgement in getting the G1X but I will have to wait and see I guess. I will post my results here when I get back (bearing in mind I am a total novice, so don't expect anything amazing).
If anyone has a link or some images they could post of some sample underwater images by a G1X it would be much appreciated.

I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that you have made an error by buying the G1X. The photo quality coming out of it is stunning the only problems (if you can call them problems) is about the Macro mode and slow autofocus speed.

About these two issues..

1. The autofocus speed is stated as "about the same as the G12". There are many many many G12 cameras being used UW with great results so I wouldn't worry about this point to much.

2. Macro mode. This seems to be where the big glitch occurs. The G12 (in macro) can focus down to less than one inch. The G1X is more like 7-9 inches. This doesn't sound like much but it is a major issue for us that want to do close up photos without using a ton of close up lenses, (which could add up to more than the camera cost). It can only focus in macro from 7 inches out to less than 3 feet and then you will have to switch out of macro mode. For normal UW photography (beyond 3 feet) I think it could be a real winner even if it only produces shots half and detailed as the land photos I've seen. You also have 1080 video (that zooms and can autofocus where the G12 can't do either in video mode). These two additions should produces some amazing videos UW as you follow a critter as it approaches you. Can't do that with my G12.

I wouldn't let any of this worry you until you try it out. For a land camera the shots (and detail) from what I've seen posted so fare are stunning with amazing detail. UW could have some clichés but I'm sure the majority of photos will still be fine.

I was going to purchase one for an upcoming trip but I already have a G12 setup so I will wait. If I didn't have all my equipment already I would have sprung for the G1X.

Take it and enjoy your new camera.. it is a beautiful camera that produces photos with detail equal to or better than the Canon 7D DSLR. So far all the UW usage is speculation because there aren't enough UW housings out yet or examples to look at. You will find reviews knocking every new camera that hits the market, that is what the internet does and most posting the bad comments haven't even held the camera yet.

There isn't a perfect UW kit or we would all know about it, they all have their plus and minus points.

Thanks for the above responses, much appreciated the time taken to reply.

azscubadude, I think your bang on the money, from the above water pictures I have taken, the image qulaity has been really impressive. I am not a professional photographer and if the AF takes a second to lock on, then for me, that's no big deal...a second might be the end of the world for some people, but a second is exactly that.

I understand the macro part which is a little bit frustrating, but I do have a little S90 with an Inon macro lens which is pretty good for my needs. I would imagine that Inon for example will produce some kind of adaptor to sell that allows additional lenses to fit the G1X housing which may fix the crap macro capabilities of the G1X.

I am looking forwards to using it in a few days time and I will post some sample images here when I get back. Thanks again.

We have the G1x camera, use of a Subsee +5, Dyron +7, or Subsee +10 macro lens will help the macro capability immensely, you can then take a photo about 1.5 inches wide, give or take a little. We also will have Dyron adapters soon for the Canon G1x housing. I think the trashing is a little premature. - Scott

Amigos,

Check out what was announced this afternoon below.

NEW Ikelite Canon G1X housing WITH TTL circuitry built in :)

Ikelite Housing for Canon Powershot G1 X

I've been learning tricks that will benefit this camera UW and the external macro lens route will solve the 7.9" minimum focussing.

BIG sensor with more dynamic range will surely result in great pics for those not wanting a SLR.
