I was considering taking my kids on the Rorqual next
August 2 to 9, 2008.

Sharks for a day or two is fine but I would like variety on their first trip.

Has anyone done it yet - comments?

I don't think this itinerary starts until next spring. I am also interested in hearing all about it... we did Cay Sal in 2006 and LOVED it, so we are deciding which of the two to do in 2008. :D

So anyone booked on Nekton Medio reef, please post us a trip report with dive sites and info!!!!!

so it has been done. I spoke with Captain Nelson while they were there a month or so ago (as part of the 10 day Cay Lobos trips) and he said the diving was excellent. In some ways he thinks the coral structures rival Cayman and the algae that you tend to see around the Caribbean is not there to the extent that it is in other places. Captain Nelton also said the visability was really good there. You will typically still dive Cay Sal Bank and see the sharks as part of the Medio Reef itinerary so I think it should offer some good diversity. They have been working to put some moorings in (they would try and send out crew in a tender to work on moorings while the guests were out diving) but I don't know that they have that many in yet. I would probably not book one of the first trips there next summer but would give them time to get the itinerary really together and the captain and crew really familiar with it. I think given a choice between the two, I would choose the Medio Reef itinerary. Hope this is helpful - Happy Diving!

thanks Pam! Are you sure you don't still work for Nekton?;)
That sounds like exactly what we are looking for! I just dragged out my divelog and read thru my entries for Cay Sal ---- dang we had a good time!!! There was only one dive I didn't love, and I still liked it alot. :D

I'm looking forward also to hearing how Medio goes. We're thinking of either jumping on one of the Pilot's last trips to Belize in 2009, or doing Medio on the Rorqual in June 2009. Fortunately I don't have to even think of making a decision for awhile, but I do know we won't be doing both...no matter how much we'd want to! ;)

Pam, that's sound advice. I was planning to take the 19 - 26 Apr 08, Medio itinerary. Maybe I'll just wait until either late May or Jun 08 to let them get all the kinks worked out.

I have a feeling there is going to be some really great diving there.

I don't still work for Nekton....but I've always been a diver first, everything else second so you can count on me telling you like it is. Sometimes I may need to do it in private, but if you ask, I'm going to tell you.

It looks like we are booking for Medio Reef - April 19-26th. Yes, it is their first time diving the area specifically with the actual liveaboard, but we don't care. We will be the test group. :D Regardless, diving with a group of our closest friends...priceless! :D
