Greetings all -

I'm considering one or the other of these lights, but undecided on the beam width. I'll use it for both macro still shots with my compact setup, and cruising over reefs with the GoPro. I'm thinking that the AL1000WP (85 degree beam) is plenty wide for the macro work, but is it wide enough for wide angle reefscapes? Or should I opt for the AL1000Xwp (120 degree beam)? Both lights have four brightness settings, 100-1000 lumens, so that's less of an issue as far as the choice. Any thoughts?

For the GoPro I'd go with the wider angle. Lots of Sola users find they need to use two lights, partly due to shadowing but also for coverage. Solas are about the same coverage as the narrow beam light.

BigBlue is very good for it's service and their lights are good value. I use their VTL light on a Zgear arm attached to a pole.

If I were you I'd get the AL1800XWP for the extra light.
