Is there any convention to numbering or identifying First Stage HP and LP ports (for purposes of discussion or making notes about a configuration, service, or repair)?

Not sure I understand, so my answer is no, there is not. HP ports are typically marked with a HP stamp and since now for many years are a different thread than LP ports. LP ports are not marked with an LP stamp.

Their number and location varies greatly from reg to reg, so it is hard to imagine a convention that would work for all regs.
