I'm trying to locate photos and classifications for these online, but you here at SB seem to be the best resources! :god:

What is this fish called? (Florida Keys)

Thanks again,
Doug

That's a Scrawled Filefish.
Aluterus scriptus

Go to http://www.reef.org/webres/gallery.htm
They have all kinds of great info on fish from various regions. They even have quizzes so you can brush up before a dive!

Yah, it's a great site! I spent hours there yesterday, but they didn't seem to have a photo of this particular fish. At least, I couldn't find one...it may be there, but after awhile I went brain dead.

Cheers,
Doug

You're right, it's not there. Sorry about that, I remembered (incorrectly) that the fish gallery was a bit more complete. Anyway, if you can, pick up a copy of the following book:
http://www.fishid.com/cgi-bin/shop.cgi?action=init&product=FISH_ID

It goes beyond just i.d. and goes into size, behavior, depth, etc. It's well worth the money, and you might be able to pick up a used copy.
