My trip on Blackbeard will be sometime in January and was wondering what everyone would recommend for a suit down there then. They recommended 6+ mil suit but if that is the case, I might as well bring my drysuit down there. Any suggestions? Thanks.

While we had a person diving in a shell drysuit during a Feb trip, she was more then hot/sweaty with nothing but a bathing suit underneath....so it might vary.

I dove in a 3mm full, while others in a 5mm. It all depends on what you can handle as the temps can go from high 60-to high 70 depending on the conditions.

Best bet is to make it modular, you know what you can handle so take suit(s) accordingly, maybe try adding a hooded core warmer to a thinner suit if not enough.

I was there in Jan 2006. I wore a 3 shorty with a 3 long over it. I also wore 3mm hood and gloves. I was toasty in the water, but that January breeze was chilly between dives. Make sure you bring enough swim suits so you can change into dry clothes between dives. Have fun

I was on Blackbeard's a couple years ago in February. I wore a 3mm full streamer over a 1.5mm shorty. This was fine for me. H2O temps were around 74-76 F.

Hmmm.... lessee here...
Blackbeards in January...
checking the old log book...
flip... flip... flip...
Here we go, Blackbeard's - Dec '95 - Jan '96
low of 72, high of 79 - 3 mil was fine
Dec '96 - Jan '97
low 78, high 81 - 3 mil was fine

Now topside's a different matter - one of those trips was overcast, windy and rainy all week, with air temps averaging about 70. It was a challenge to get dry and warm between dives. The other was sunny and calm, with air temps in the high 70's to low 80's, and shucking the wetsuit and basking in the sun made for delightful surface intervals. The diving was superb on every Blackbeards I've been on (5).
