I'm curious what people do for annual service for items purchased over the Internet (BCDs, Regualtors, ect.) that require an annual service to maintain the warranty. If you have your LDS do it are they annoyed that you purchased online versus through them?
My first set of regs were bought from an authorized dealer online. (Dacor and Mares). The LDS I took them too didn't ask where I bought them. My next set I bought in Florida from an authorized dealer as he was cheaper on the Apeks than the local LDS was. We'll see when they need servicing what the local says but no worries, would give me an excuse to hop on back to New Smyrna for a week.
My LDS doesn't seem to mind. Consider that the annual checks are not free. He charges about $35 for each item so he's still making money off me. And I buy other things from him as well as booking trips.
I bought mine online when living in California. After moving to San Antonio I decided to give the ol' LDS a try again. They were a total rip off for servicing and the customer experience was crap too. I will now be shipping everything back each year to scuba.com
Agree with bfisher. Most, while they want your business up front, will be happy to service gear, too. They are getting paid to provide the inspection/annual services.
This Wednesday, before I go to the Ft. Lauderdale airport, I will bring two regulator sets in for servicing. Even though I am able to service them, I haven't the time to do so.
The money I spend is inexpensive insurance to help ensure that I, a recreational diver, will not have problems on my next dive trip.
Here in Michigan there are a more than a few shops that are totally anti internet anything. If you buy anything that requires service one shop will not work on your equipment at all. This one is in the detroit area. There are several others that i have talked to that when they find out you bought online charge double to triple the service fees. So if i do decide to purchase online i will send it back to the palce of purchase to avoid problems.
