I'm starting to wonder if I'm tipping an appropriate amount. Rather than worring about the specifics of what I tipped, I'd like to hear what others feel would be appropriate total for the number of people specified for boatmen and DM tips for two different days.

Trip 1: Three people during the week, all three are fairly competent divers. Gear for two people was hauled from the car and back up (Aquaventure), one person insists on carring own gear. DM sort of swam around with divers following.

Trip 2: Two people on a weekend. Gear for both was hauled down and up (Aquaventure), neither diver carried their own gear. One fairly competent diver, one just out of OW. DM spent a lot of time assisting new diver with bouyancy issues. DM brought bread for fish feeding and pointed out interesting critters.

In addition, what's the general rule on tipping the resort staff? Does anyone ever tip the waitstaff? If so, do you do it at the table or when paying the bill right before leaving?

i usually tip just before leaving the resort, only select people who helped me in specific cases like when i asked one of the waitstaff to buy me some batteries (in this case aquav).

i also give a token amount for the bangkero who carries the gear to and from the car

I always tip before I leave at the end of the day. To cover the wait/frontdesk staff, I always leave tip in the tip box by the front desk (and make sure they see me put it in so they always know I'm gracious of their treatment towards me). I always tip the bangkeros and gearhaulers, and if one of them did something extraordinary then I would tip that certain bangkero a little extra (like the time my hoses was leaking and they tightened the all the connections on the 1st stage in less than 2 mins so I could go back down).

Certain people I tip more cause they remember my name.

Mike Veitch:
Your name is Chip from Toronto!!

I expect an envelope soon....
...just keep waiting, mikey. It'll get there eventually. btw you forgot the center of canada portion.

i tip selected people who personally helped out and another tip to the TIP box for the rest of the staff.

and yes the bangkero and his assistant as well. actually i only tip henry (portulano bangkero) and his assitant .

at times i tip thru kind. i bring some stuff from manila say like cup o noodles, snacks, slippers(to us this is nothing to them it MATTERS), a long sleeved shirt (also to us nothing to them PRICELESS !!!)

hehehhehe, basically, before giving stuffs aside from money, make sure they would NEED or appreciate it. basically i observe them and see what they need. if you see their slippers tied with a wire or some nylon monofilament then they are in need of a slipper.

next time you guys go, check out their slippers, shirt (holes) or even a CAP would be greately appreciated if they are using those things.

I like that idea, thanks Pao. Gotta see if I can get some John Deere hats from a buddy :D

ok ok, now all of you are bringing hats..... now that would spoil the novelty of what you would be giving.

one thing, the guys on the bangka lounge most of the time in rocking boats while waiting for you guys so alternative tips :

1. PLASTIC PLAYING CARDS (but tell them they have to scan the sea everytime they throw a card.)

2. SUNGLASSES from I2I they are cheap just php200
3. transistor radio less than php500

4. LED flashlights (php100less than at divisoria for a 9 LED one, GUYS THEY LOVE THIS STUFF !!!!) even the gurls... they use it when they walk home at night.

5. SLIPPERS AGAIN - give your FAVORITE GUY an ISLANDER <-- very gud)
6. Long sleeves cotton shirts (php200 less at divisoria)
7. a pack of CIGARETTES , after handing this to them, tell them "here, i hope you die happy"
8. Lighters how the hell would they be able to use the cigarettes you gave them
9. komics
10. FHM old issue , soiled ones , they would RAVE about these soiled FHMs
11. old dive masks and snorkel (so they could go spearfishing during the weekdays, when we divers are not there and go where they hear the huge grouper was)
12. portable TV

hehehhehehe
