I read an article the other day written by a European about diving in Cozumel. He stated that the diving was American style. What is the difference?

My guess is the regular type, yoke vs DIN. If you have a DIN regulator you should bring a yoke adapter or check with your dive op to insure they can accommodate.

American style? Did they mean you dive with a mandatory DM?

That would really be called Cozumel style...

For best I know the only difference is tank size and metric measurements, WE have tanks asd guages to del with both

The difference now is trvial. For many tears the German TUV has a strict standard on :high Pressure tanks and valves. deregulated down 3450 with the world wide hp Yoke PSI. For those sort of valves to fit our tanks. we usually had to convert, but never was it a problem. Right now all of our tanks come with yoke insert which can be removed with an allen wrinch in 5 seconds to make it full TUV.

Promise, no problem with Aldora

Perhaps just jealous that Cozumel, like America, is relatively unregulated compared to Europe, less of a nanny state mentality with respect to mandating/enforcing depth limits, etc ?

Not really sure on this one - Cozumel is very much a nanny state? Can you dive without a DM?

In practical terms, yes. Coz is pretty relaxed, once the dive ops sees you 'have a clue' they're pretty liberal with profiles, etc. They will stick a DM in the water with the group, to keep up the necessary appearances, but otherwise cut plenty of slack. On my last trip, the DM actually ...encouraged.....me to 'go deep' on one of the wall dives to check out a nice 'stand of old forest growth' located in a large semi-cave-like scoop shaped indentation in the wall, that had escaped Wilma's fury......this spot was @ 130- - 150' deep, so I'm cruising the deep wall 'solo', DM is hanging up at the reef top @ 40' hunting lionfish, we're both happy, I get left alone to do my own thing....awesome!

Sounds like a "same ocean" DM. Did you stay longer?

From a nanny state perspective we dis Cozumel since we believe that you must have a DM in order to get wet. Maybe I am incorrect? We love being able to dive any time we want in Bonaire.

There is some shore diving in Cozumel as well as cave diving. Both can be done with a dm, guide or anything else. I think you are actually looking at the difference between boat diving and shore diving.
