– Sun Oct 24, 11:08 am ET

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras – Forecasters at the U.S. National Hurricane Center say Tropical Storm Richard has strengthened into a hurricane.

The storm lashed Honduras' Caribbean coast with heavy rain and wind and became a hurricane on Sunday as it roared toward Belize and southeastern Mexico.

A hurricane warning was in effect for the coast of Belize and the western part of the Honduras coast.

Early Sunday, Richard's center was located about 95 miles (155 kilometers) east-southeast of Belize City and was moving west-northwest at about 12 mph (19 kph). It had sustained winds of 85 mph (140 kmh).

Authorities warned of deadly floods and mudslides in Honduras and declared states of maximum alert in four coastal provinces.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) — Tropical Storm Richard lashed Honduras' Caribbean coast with heavy rain and wind and was expected to strengthen into a hurricane on Sunday as it roared toward Belize and southeastern Mexico.

Authorities warned of deadly floods and mudslides in Honduras and declared states of maximum alert in four coastal provinces.

Lisandro Rosales, head of Honduras' Permanent Emergency Commission, said civil defense offices along the coast were preparing to carry out evacuations if needed.

Richard is likely to pass near the Honduran island of Roatan, which is popular with tourists and divers, before approaching Belize and southeastern Mexico late Sunday, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida.

Hurricane warnings were issued for the coasts of Honduras and Belize, and storm warnings were in place for Mexico's southern Caribbean coast.

Ask America: Learn. Listen. Be heard.

Early Sunday, Richard was just off Honduras' coast, at a point about 30 miles (48 kilometers) north of Roatan and was moving west-northwest at about 10 mph (17 kph).

Its maximum sustained winds strengthened to 70 mph (110 kph) and were expected to reach hurricane strength later Sunday, according to the hurricane center.

Honduran officials said rain was falling on the eastern province of Gracias a Dios, where floods have been severe in the past.

"Richard is traveling slowly parallel to Honduras' Atlantic coast and causing rains since Friday night on the Caribbean seaboard," said Daniel Posas of Honduras' National Meteorological Service.

"Bands from Richard are already provoking strong winds in Gracias a Dios province that will increase over the course of the day."

The hurricane center said Richard could cause "large, destructive waves" and storm surges of 2 to 4 feet above normal tides in Honduras and Belize. The storm could bring 3 to 5 inches (7 to 13 centimeters) of rain to northern Honduras and as much as 7 inches (18 centimeters) in some spots, which the center said "could produce life-threatening flash floods and mud slides."

Another Video of Fridays last day diving on the coral walls doing the swim through

Mary here is the longer version video ..........unbelizable..........

Good time, Good friends, .............great diving............

Thanks to Jeff and Becky for being my wonderful dive buddy and vacation travellers. My non diving wife who is so supportive of our adventures.

Special thanks for Don Perryman for donating his little Kodak Zx1 camera and Ikelite housing for this video.

The small consumer video camera held up and did a great job at 100 feet deep and above, I used my 15 watt Ikelite light and a color correction filter below 15 feet deep on this trip.

Pretty amazing video out of this little low cost underwater video camera set up.

http://www.ikelite.com/web_two/kodak_zx1.html

Camera cost about $60
Ikelite housing cost about $286
Ikelite lite about $250

Total underwater HD camera set up good to depths of recreational diving 130 feet plus $600

Not bad to become a starting underwater videographer with great video results.
