Hey all-
I'm headed to La Paz Mexico in a few days to dive..I have a medical condition that is causing my resting heart rate to be around 85-95. Just checking in if anyone has any experience or thoughts? Is there any reason why diving would be dangerous that you can think of?

I am 35 year old, fit female, healthy other than a bit of a hyper condition right now. I'm not a nervous diver...any feedback will be greatly appreciated!

We're going to dive with the sea lions and if we're lucky see a few hammerheads though I hear they've sparsely been seen.

Cheers!

I think I would call Dan 1-800-446-2671 and ask them or go online at www.diversalertnetwork.org. Dan will be able to anaswer your question or be able to suggest a doctor that can answer your questions. I know I would want to make sure before I went that it was safe. Even if I swam with sea lions and saw a few hammerheads it wouldn't be worth dying for.

I think you'd better consult your doctor. Calling DAN is a good idea too but your own doctor probably knows the ins and outs of your condition. I would think if you're taking any medication like beta-blockers that you'll be SOL.

See a doctor. Get fixed, then dive.

The last thing you want to do is go diving all jacked up.

If your doctor doesn't know much about diving or hyperbaric medicine, DAN can also provide specialists that he or she can consult (over the phone). Alternatively, they can also point you to a dive-knowledgeable doctor in your area (if any).

My resting heartbeat is 85-100 I take 4 different meds. I dive somewhat regularly and always feel better underwater. Like everyone else said check with your doc.

Thank you! i, glad to hear it...

No doubt - check with your doc, and importantly check with a doc who knows dive medicine. Medications for your heart can affect sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve pathways which alter the way your body can respond in the event of stress. These in addition to any heart condition can be dangerous without proper evaluation by a qualified physician. I say qualified because I work with doc's every day, they are all great, but none of them would give you a straight answer when you ask about the additional stress put on your body by diving. Hope this helps.
