Hello ScubaBoard,

I have been reading scuba board post for a while now yet just decided to join. The Scuba board came with high praise from a friend of mine and i thought since i am about to be a DM in a week i should join. I am as well an Eagle Scout and a jack of all trades. I love exploration and discovery and working with my hands. I have done a lot of jobs in my life working my way to being able to pursue a career involving my passions. To this date i have worked over 64 different jobs starting when i was 12 official growing up in a family business focused in liquid oxygen and medical supplies, the family had a few other off shoot ventures. I grew up in a college prep school in north eastern pa named Wyoming seminary where 75% of the school came from over seas. I am some one people come to to get a job done and need it done now with out complaining, yet knowing i expect to be compensated for my work in some form or another.

I had a simple question i thought i would put to the site to start things off. What are the top ten books and or videos one could read and watch to help with being a better DM? Suggestions of books on the topics of how to better organize and lead people would be greatly appreciated I am question my friends every day and watching what every other DM and Instructor on the islands does however i am thirty for all the knowledge i can soak up on the issue. I want to make sure that i am doing everything i can to make sure the divers i lead are having fun and are being safe. A lot of my friends tell me it is like herding out there and from what i have seen and experienced it some times is. I have had my own experiences where i have had over protective and hand on approaches yet i know they are doing what they think is best for the safety of the divers, reefs and marine. I have seen DMs with steel rods they smack off their tanks and use like cattle prods. I have seen people thrown around under water and almost forced under. I have seen DMs who herd like the cowboys of old and treat the divers like cattle to the point the have a glassy look when talking to divers. I would love to read some of the horror stories of being a DM from some one i do not personally know and how they have learned from it and become a better DM because of it. I understand the risks in leading people around underwater and the liabilities of the situation. Also i would love to know if there are any new tools in use today that make the duties of a DM easier to do.

I expect great things from this forum and look forward to a reward relationship with it. If there are any questions i can answer or assitance i can offer please feel free to contact me. Thank you in advance for the answer this forum will provide me with and as i always say have fun and be safe.
