I am going to Akumal, Mexico next week. I wil be the only diver in my group and I am looking for a shop or guide to dive with.

We dove with Dive with Natalie and Ivan when we dove Akumal in December, 2012 and highly recommend them. They are independent but dive out of the Akumal Dive Center right on the beach. They only take out small groups and usually bring a camera or spear for the Lionfish (they asked us which was our preference). Do a search on TripAdvisor for plenty of reviews. They also have a Facebook page. They also set us up with a great cave diver for our first cavern dive at Dos Ojos Cenote, if that's on your to-do list. There are some very nice dive sites and tons of turtles. I'm sure you'll love it. I'm jealous!

I haven't dived with Natalie and Ivan, but on a friend's recommendation, I have referred several people to them and have gotten uniformly positive reports.

I cant recommend Tim and Kathrin at Blue Experience Diving enough...we had a wonderful time with them...check them out on Trip Advisor...

We also dove out of Akumal Dive Centre, July 2013, and had a good experience. My daughter, 17, was a new diver, so we did a bunch of shallow (55 ft) slow drifts. We were at a hotel up the beach, and Akumal Dive Centre was convenient, moderately priced, and reliable. We saw lots of turtles, some barracudas, lots of medium and small marine life. One dive was guided by Natalie, and she was great, particularly working with new divers--she gave some feedback on the skills they did well, and a suggestion for improvement. We also did a family snorkeling trip to Dos Ojos; my wife and other daughter are non-divers, but they really got into it.

If you are right in the village of Akumal, Akumal Dive Shop will be within walking walking distance of wherever you are staying. They run a nice operation, and will take you out in the Carribean, runa a bull shark dive up to Playa, and offer cenote excursions as well. Just don't tell anyone. Akumal diving is great beacause there are not hugs crowds. Small boats, uncrowded reefs, wonderful people, great snorkeling in the bay, mass quantities of sea turtles. So ssshhhhhh.

You couldn't pay me to dive with ADC. What's the current situation in Akumal?

I've dove in Akumal a few years ago and was not impressed. A lot of dead reef, run off algae and no large fish. I've dove with ADC and the dives were short (@ 40 minutes), bottom time was limited by the hardest breather in the group.

What Akumal does offer are nice beaches and a great launching pad for diving the cenotes in the area.

And a great place to snorkel all day with huge turtles, rays, and fish.
