Is there a quick foolproof way to tell the diferrence from a lesser amberjack and a greater amberjack? Kinda dumb question, but I'm missing something obvious? Thanks

No, it's not easy to do quickly.

Mostly I just look at size. A lesser amberjack is much smaller and has a bigger belly and bigger eyes. I've heard others count the spines, but I can't do that underwater quickly. I never see them underwater so I don't look for them.

Greater AJ has a pronounced dark bar running diagonally through the eye.

Example of a greater AJ
Spearo Wayne is 6'4"
120lbs with tail hard on deck.
