I live in the L.A. and Orange County area and would like to know if anybody knows of an affordable scuba repair shop. I have a lot of equipment to service and don't want to go bankrupt in the process. thanks for any help you can give me. Thanks, Vlad

Hi Vlad,

How about starting by telling us what sort of equipment you have?

As this is the Do It Yourself section, it is often asked how can one service his/her own equipment. While the task of servicing a regulator is not very difficult, it is not for everyone. If this is the case for you, you can still keep some of your hard earned cash by learning to inspect your equipment so that you don't have it serviced unnecessarily.

See the post in the link below the Usual Suspects put together for just this purpose.

Cheers,

Couv

The two main items I need serviced is my 1st & 2nd stage Sherwood SR1 Reg. and my Atomic SS1 Octo.. Thx. Vlad

You can call around for prices but I would be surprised if you found any big differences. My rub (which got me to DIY) was not so much the cost of the service, but the quality and the frequency of the service. My early experience was with a number of shops just doing a poor job. So, your problem is finding a way to get quality service when your regulators need it which is probably in the 3 to 5 year range.

I feel a little bad saying this, but if the SR1 were my regulator, I'd just sell it instead of having it serviced. It's a poorly designed regulator IMO, and since you're in southern California and have an atomic octo/inflator, why not get an atomic regulator? Then you can just bring it directly to them for servicing.

I agree with Halocline, Atomic regs are fantastic..

Give serious consideration to learning how to service your gear......If you're a regular diver and plan on diving for many years, the cost of tools will pay for themselves many times over and the knowledge/understanding you gain will make you a better/safer diver......There are many 'intangible' benefits too......'Tweaking' gear just the way you like it, knowing it was done 'right' and 'on-site' repairs are a few..........SB is full of horror stories about so-called 'authorized' LDS's........Give it some thought..........

If this is the case then you need to find a shop that is willing to service both brands. Mixing different brands makes servicing challenging, especially if the regulators require specialized parts.
