Hi,

Looking to go to Freeport in Dec. and needed some accomodation recommendations. Looking for affordable but livable. Would rather spend our money on more diving, but still want to be comfortable. Not the Ritz but not a dump.

Rental cars are not allowed, right? What is there to do on Freeport?- may help determine where we'd like to stay.

Thanks,
Laura

I've only been to GB once before about 3 years ago, so I'm no expert, but here's what I remember-

Accomodations- no clue, we stay at a timeshare.

You can rent cars there! Great way to see the island and get out of the tourist areas.

Other than diving, I really enjoyed snorkeling here, esp. on a kayaking/snorkeling trip to a small island. Easy paddle, great snorkeling, with lunch on the island. There's also the caves (Lucaya Caves I think they are called) which are interesting, but only if you have time to kill IMO.

The rental car is definitely worth it, and will probably help out a lot on finding a decent but affordable place to stay. Plus, it was also fun just driving around seeing how the locals live outside of Freeport. The bus service isn't too bad, though, if you decide no to the rental car.

To Do- Casino, drinking, shopping, drinking, eating, drinking, dancing in the marketplace, etc. Most of which you can do in the US..... unlike diving in clear warm waters... :)

Hello,

I stayed at Port Lucaya resort and yacht club back in June and had a nice stay! It was pretty nice. Nothing special at all but it was clean and cheap. It's also at a great location. Its right next to all the bars and restaurants at Port Lucaya. I dove with Blackbeards for the week so I can't help you much with diving in GB.

here's a link for the hotel

I would suggest you avoid Freeport, it is a dump. Port Lucaya is much nicer.
Freeport DOES have a good dive shop at Xanadu Resort, but whatever you do, avoid staying at the Xanadu "Resort"..... "Run down" is just no where near a strong enough description.

Viva Fortuna has some great packages that are all inclusive including diving. Flamingo Bay & Port Lucaya are both reasonable. Granny's Bed & Breakfast is very reasonable & they pick you up at the airport.
