I plan to buy my son a AER300GC
Aeris 300G Computer Console With Compass for Xmas. My budget is around $350, so I cannot get the top rated equipment.
I would like to know if this unit is better than most rental guages.
Does anyone know of any good/bad points of the unit. My son normally dives in warn seas in 30/50 ft of water. Is there any thing else that I need to get at the same time like a quick release.

Thanks

I have been using my 300G for about 2 years without problems. It is a great computer for the money. I will probably by upgrading to the Aeris AI shortly to get the additional air-integration features and give the 300G to my wife.

Here are some of the 300G features that stand out for me:

1. Overall layout is great.
2. Rugged
3. Easy to read analog pressure gauge
4. < 500 psi audible warning (usually only found on air integrated models)
5. Batteries are easy to buy
6. Great battery life
7. Easy to use compass.

Things to watch out for:

1. Don't over-tighten the battery cover / crown
2. Learn how to use the computer before diving
3. The dive download software sucks! It also only works on Win '95

Accessories to buy:

1. Protective cover for both the computer and pressure gauge
2. Compass attachment
3. Loop stretch chord with clip for BC attachment

I wouldn't worry about a quick release.

Good luck.

Thanks, Your info helps alot. Why would skip a quick release? I understood they help put the computer away quickly after a dive, saving wear and tear. I will talk to the vendor about the soft ware, they should have updated by now. John

I've used my Aeris 300G console with compass for 2.5 years and highly recommend it to anyone.

It is very easy to read and use UW. The light integration with the SPG is very handy on night and dark dives: you can read all gages with a single hand. The unit is rugged and very lightweight. Batteries are user replaceable, which is very handy and also saves you some money.

The only "drawback" is that a console is not the best place for a compass. If you're going to do some serious navigation I would recommend a wrist mount compass, but for occasional use the console mount is fine.

I have never had any trouble with mine. I don't see any advantages of a quick release. It just adds another potential problem point. You will need someting to attach it to the BC. My preferred solution if a retractor inside the left BC pocket with the wire running through a small grommet. But you need to see what works with your son's BC.
