I would be grateful for any advice (please be kind - new to this site !).

I have recently started diving in the UK (having only dived abroad previously) and have purchased gear. I have now bought a pony but my BCD (Diva LX) has weight pockets around the tank strap which means that I am unable to fit the clamp in a suitable position (it is sticking out which I think will affect my balance). Any suggestions (other than buying a new BCD !) ?

Thanks very much

Hi Gabster, and welcome.

Pony bottles are a point of contention around here, and you will probably get a few posts either telling you you don't need one, or asking why you do.

If you do a search on the board you will get more than enough information on both sides (pro-pony and anti-pony) to evaluate the opposing views for yourself.

Hvaing said that, I think you will also find that even most of the anti-pony folks recommend slinging the pony rather than mounting it in back. Basically this means connecting it between d-rings on your shoulder strap and waist belt. That way you can reach the valve, check the gauge, and even hand it off to someone else if you are so inclined. Slinging it in front would also take care of your mounting problems. Any balance problems should be overcome by re-positioning your lead.

Disclaimer: I'm not a pony user yet, but have been researching the topic.

Safe diving,

The DivaLX has adequate attachment points to sling the pony. Try it, you'll like it.

If you want an alternate way, other than slinging the bottle. I have a friend who has the same BC. She just put a second cam band through the top of the BC. There is plenty of space there. Then she attached a quick draw pony bracket to that cam strap. The strap holds the pony tank stable against the main cylinder. She only puts weight in one of the back weight pouches to off set the weight of the pony. Works like a charm.

Thanks to all those who replied. I will have a look at all the discussions re: pony's and try out your suggestions. I'll let you know how I get on !
