I am considering visiting Pennekamp state park sometime next week, and from my initial research it seems as if the actual snorkeling/diving part of the park is all located approx 6ish miles east of the park. A friend keeps telling me they used to snorkel all over the place right by the campsites when they were younger, yet current maps have it all marked as canoe/kayak trails. It seems as if there isn't a point to making a trip if you do not schedule a boat charter/rental to take you out to the actual trail? Thoughts?

There are a couple spots for snorkeling in Largo Sound inside the park that don't require a boat. However, those might be good for a short while. Better snorkeling/diving is in the submerged portion of the park that you'll need a boat to get to.
