ADVENTURES WITH OMEGA TOURS AND LODGE
LA CEIBA, HONDURAS
With the weight of the world so heavy these days, Omega Tours and Lodge outside la Ceiba , Honduras defies gravity. You arrive after a ride up a gravel road along the Rio Congrejal like a wilderness traveler who has found a friendly outpost. Greeted as if long lost family by the communal atmosphere, a stop for a few days at the Omega Lodge and their great tours are not to be missed by ANY divers or visitors coming to the Bay Islands and the coast.
We stayed two nights in their Creek Cabin, a perfectly rustic large screened in cabin built over a mountain spring stream. With electric and outdoor stone showers just steps away, the cabin also had two solid beds (Better pillows could be had tho!) Two short trail are right out your dorr for a mini jungle trek at any time that brings you back through the old orange groves sprinkled with lime & grapefruit trees.
The real adventures are to be had on OmegaÃÔ great tours of the Pico Bonito National Park and surrounding area. We hiked to the base of El Bucco waterfallÃÔ 90m cascade with our native Honduran guide Alejandro. A local legend said to be at least 70, he lead us up the mountain through the rainforest that was breathtaking. From safety ropes he set up (by crossing the suspect area on his own without them!) at tricky spots to his knowledge of the forest, he was and made us one with the mountain. And when he jumped about 10m into a pool below a smaller waterfall on the water up, all I could say was Bravo Senor!
Whitewater rafting with Omega is truly exciting and intense on the stunning Rio Congrejal. Super huge boulders, a river bed tapestry of colored stone, the rainforest mountains and great repaids are to be seen to be appreciated. Our guide Jason began with a no nonsense safety and paddling briefing followed by a practice is a calm area. He lead us over class III plus rapids in a thrilling ride down a great river. With Jeremy, Sea Bass and a cool visiting rafting guide from Oregon kayaking with us, we were a flotilla of fun and safety. You just gotta go rafting with Omega!
Our last trip took us kayaking through Cacao Lagoon through jungle vines to the Caribbean Sea. Our most excellent guide Jeff pointed out all kinds of birds and bats in the swampy jungle. Always looking for monkeys (howler/whiteface/spider) we landed for a simple but nice picnic on the beach. On our way back by a different route, like so many dives when you see the best thing in the last few minutes? we paddled into the last lagoon to three howlers just in the trees hanging upside down with a father feeding branches to a baby. WE watched them move and munch! Amazingly cool!
The food at the lodge is absolutely delicious and ÁÉomemade to order individually every time every meal! The bar is lively and fun at night with a cool mix of characters and guests. The food, lodging, tours and bar at Omega are very very reasonably priced and one of the best values and experiences I have had on many trips to all parts of the Caribbean. But what really makes the place is the people and atmosphere genuinely nice people always there to help you and make your time there fun, safe and friendly.
A special shout out to Sylvia, Ryan, Christian, Jeff, Sea Bass, and everyone there at Omega! To all my fellow divers and travellers? Take a few days to chill with Omega when you come to the area. Defy gravity! Like me, you will wish you stayed a few days more and will plan to come back!
