Adding an ION 2nd Stage to an existing A1 rig

I have an A1 with the unbalanced 1st stage. I was looking to remove the generic octo and do either of the following:

• Get an A1 octo and use the rig like that
• Get an ION 2nd stage and use it as my primary. Let the current A1 be the octo.

I would really like to have an adjustable primary but not sure if it will work with the existing 1st stage correctly or if it will provide any benefit. Whichever route I go I will get the rig serviced with either addition. Thanks for any comments on the matter.
