I heard a whisper that there was a dive accident in the Dominican Republic that killed five dive instructors last week, and have been searching for details but have found nothing. Has anyone else heard this or should I write it off as a nasty rumor??

I certainly hope it's a nasty rumour, i haven't come across anything myself!

I took a quick glance back over the yahoo dive accidents list archives but didn't see anything. *shrug*

Nothing on the DecoStop about it...guess it might be a nasty rumor

As far as i have read on www.taucher.net (in german) 3 of them died, 2 went into a chamber.
Friday 26. of november one of them had a problem around 180ft and another diver wanted to assist him. They then sunk down together.
The others went deeper to help them and reached more than 330ft and then surfaced without any decostop. During the evacuation into the chamber one died.
Sounds like just a normal deep-air accident in my opinion.

I can confirm that such accident really happened .

I live in D.R. and besides the fact that it appears on all news papers , i contacted a friend of mine from the local committee of assistance for scuba accidents.
Three divers die (bodies of 2 of them were not found) and 2 more went to deco chamber with good results.

They made a deep dive without proper equipment nor planification.

I asked for a copy of the full report from the committee , as soon as became available i will post it in order that we can learn from other's mistakes and avoid such things to happen again .
