Abalone poacher in South Africa killed by shark

Here's a link to a story I received over e-mail. It doesn't specify whether the guy was on scuba or just free-diving when he was poaching for abalone. Sad news though.

I would believe that the diver was a freediver due to economic reasons - typically very poor people doing dirty work for others.

That is Sad Business. It somewhat furiates me when hear about these things, only because these type situtations could be disreguarded.

Its too bad he died, but maybe that will stop others from poaching. I really have very little simpathy for poachers . . .

isn't Dyer Island a seal habitat with a well known great white population due to the concentration of prey. The description of what the lookout saw sounds like the very method used by great whitees to ambush seals from below.

I'm from South Africa and I actually know people in this industry. The fishing industry allows foreign agencies to fish using nets to there hearts delights, ruining the enviroment. These guys use scuba and sell the stuff on the black market. They make lots of money, but all the time the collaborate effort of the pouchers and the commercial fisherman killing the entire areay.

Great Whites down there cruise on the bottom, spot the seal shadow and hits it with insane ferosity. These things can happen very easily. They know the risks.........That's besides getting shot at by the cops......

Also happens to be a favorite Great White hangout. (Nice waves for surfing as well)
