I've been trying to convince my wife to switch from her film camera (Kodak Advantix point and shoot) to a digital camera. She was resistant until I offered up that the camera could double as an underwater camera too. She's interested. She's been using the cheap disposables while snorkeling and I want to get her away from that.

I wanted to get a quality camera with at least 5MP resolution. She doesn't dive, and probably never will, but snorkels and loves it, so great underwater features are not necessary because it will likely never go below 10 feet. What I do need though is a small underwater housing. She has small hands, so the housing must be easily held by her.

I use an Oly C5050 with a PT-015 housing while diving and wanted to put her into one as well. However, the housing is too big so she shied away from that.

Would the A95 with the Canon housing fit these needs?

I was surprised how small the WP-DC50 housing is. The box it came in measures 4 X 4 1/2 X 6.

Perfect, just what I needed to know. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

It's a great set up, you'll love it!

Hi PhotoTJ,

I've been hunting for a UW camera to take to the Maldives in November and am considering the same set up as you for the UW and on land capabilities. I was just wondering if you used a strobe for any of your pics, or if this is even possible with the A80/WP-DC900 set up? I'm hoping to see some big marine life in the form of Mantas and Whale sharks (fingers crossed) and want to make sure the camera I buy is good enough to take good clear pictures from a reasonable distance without the need for a strobe as I can't really justify the cost at the moment.

Thanks in advance

PhotoTJ,
Thanks for the info. I showed my wife the Internet info I've been able to drum up and she's agreed to the camera. I'll be ordering the caerma and housing today.

It's possible, though I haven't tried it. (A little pricey right now, although I do see one in my future, and a WA lens.) All the shots I've taken have been available light, or on camera flash. If you are going somewhere with bathtub clear water you should be fine, just take out the removable flash diffuser and you should be all set.

I need advice on an underwater housing for my s95. Shots are done in crashing waves along the shore at night while shorecasting in Hawaii. My concern is lighting. Using a waterproof camera I'm fine but want to improve on the image quality thus the S95. Will I have sufficient lighting using the diffuser with subjects about 10-20 feet away?
