I am excited this summer I will go for round two with my Canon A80 and WP-DC900 setup in the Tulum area. I was planning on going on a whale shark excursion in June from Playa del Carmen and was curious if anyone had any advice on wide angle lenses or any other advice when taking pictures of whale sharks.

I look forward to refining my u/w skills for my second go around.

Appreciate any help,

Josh

There have been several recent threads on whale shark photos. You should search the archives. I'm going to Playa/Cozumel in July and am planning to do the whale shark dive/snorkel. I just got in my 8" dome and 12-24 lense for my D80. Bring on the whale sharks!

Either Inons wide angle or fisheye would work well, I actually prefer the fisheye to the
165 W/A. check my avatar, thats the A80 with fisheye.

Please excuse the ignorant question, but is fisheye a brand like inon? I just posted some questions regarding my A80 and trip to Cocos in May. Do you believe WA is necessary for whale shark / large critter photography.

Sorry A fisheye lens is a type of lens with extremely wide angle of view 180 degrees.
Numerous manufacturers make them. Inon make a very nice one that is removable
in the water. A W/A means you can get much closer and therefore the sharpness and
colour will be much better.

So it seems like the inon 165 fisheye lens would be best bet and I would need the AD to go with it also. Any suggestions on how to use this lens best or anyone have any example pictures of it in action?

Shooting with a fisheye lens is pretty easy. They have huge depth of field eg. everything from dome of the lens to infinity is in focus. For quick shots the cameras
auto mode will work well, otherwise use manuel mode with a starting point of say 5.6
and fast shutter speed 1/25- 1/400 for a nice blue background. Unless your shooting
W/A macro a flash isn't needed. The built in flash won't function properly with W/A
and fisheyes as the size of the lens blocks it. Have a look at my gallery, most (except
nudibrachs) taken with my fisheye.

Pretty interesting. I was just under the assumption that WA's and fisheye's were for macro type shots. So now the question is - what is needed for a WA setup? At the Inon site, they have mounts and lenses which are somewhat expensive. Are there other alternatives? Are there lenses that mount on the camera inside the housing? Are all lenses external of the housing? What about ones that are not removable? I was all set to just get a strobe for my upcoming trip to Coz, but after seeing your pics, I think now I need a WA lens, too. Thanks alot. (add heavy sarcasm here)

Yeah they are a tad expensive, the advantage of the Inon lens is you can use them on other makes and models of cameras and only need to get a different mount. Also
you can swap between close up and W/A in the water. If you want lenses that fit
the camera you need to get a DSLR and then things really start to get pricey.
I'm in the process of doing just that.
